Report: Continental Will Be Built at Flat Rock
At Tuesday’s Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, Ford President of The Americas Joe Hinrichs made clear that the Lincoln MKS will go bye-bye at some point in 2016, ostensibly opening the door for the return of the Continental. It was also noted that when production of the MKS ends at Chicago Assembly, it will pretty much spell the end of Lincoln production at the plant altogether, meaning that the Continental would need to be built elsewhere.
According to industry sources speaking with Automotive News (subscription required), that elsewhere could very well be Flat Rock Assembly, where it would be built alongside the new Ford Fusion and Mustang.
Ford declined comment, but did confirm that the Continental is indeed coming and that more information would be revealed as launch time draws nearer. Confirmation of the return of the Continental namebadge not only solidifies Lincoln’s move away from the MK nomenclature, but it also makes the return of the Aviator in 2019 seem all the more possible.
Since relaunching in 2012, Lincoln pledged to release three new vehicles by the end of 2015, following up with the MKZ and MKC and adding the 2016 MKX later this year.
