In today’s market, all vehicles need to have advanced, user-friendly tech to be competitive. Whether it’s Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth, or what have you, every automaker is vying to create the most premium in-vehicle experience. The creators of those technologies are also hoping they’ll be selected for the best and brightest models. According to a study completed by ABI Research, Amazon was ranked the top connected car platform.

By the end of 2019, the connected car cloud market is estimated to reach a value of $193 million. With companies continuously improving upon their technology, that value is sure to rise even further heading into 2020. In the study done by ABI Research, 11 of the most well-known connected car platforms — including Microsoft, Harman, Google, and IBM, among others — were analyzed in a variety of categories like ease of management, flexibility, scalability, and breadth of services offered.

“OEMs are searching for highly scalable and stable platforms coupled with specialized solutions using cutting-edge technology from vendors that do not seek to fight them for market share or brand loyalty. None of the analyzed vendors have achieved this yet, although AWS and Microsoft are close. Additionally, perhaps for lack of expertise in software development, some OEMs prefer convenience over excessive customization,” said Maite Bezerra, Research Analyst at ABI Research.

The study revealed that Amazon leads in both innovation and implementation, with Microsoft in a close second and Harman in third place. Combined, those three companies make up 70 percent of the connected car platform market share. Amazon’s Alexa was among one of the top reasons the brand claimed the top spot, with the voice assistant recently implemented in all new GM vehicles.
