General Motors design boss Michael Simcoe said during a podcast interview that automakers could add wheels as big as 24 inches or even 26 inches to upcoming vehicles. These wheels would be a large increase from the 22-inch wheels that are often found on current models.

The potential for 26-inch wheels

During an episode of the “Brembo Red” podcast, Dan Sandberg, president and CEO of Brembo North America, interviewed Michael Simcoe. One topic that was brought up during the episode was vehicles’ brakes and wheels.

According to Simcoe, based on the design philosophy of GM as well as the automotive industry as a whole, it’s looking as though the designs are “headed toward 24- and 26-inch wheels.” These wheels would be a big change for production cars.

The size increase of the wheels would coincide with the evolving design of vehicles. As stated by Simcoe, “any designer you’ll talk to will talk about how to make a vehicle look good and lower, longer, wider. And you add to that large-diameter wheel and tire.”

Many drivers find wheels to be notable features of current models and enjoy bold styles. As such, Simcoe notes that automakers will be working to pair each set of wheels to specific vehicles.

Not only are wheels going to become larger, but brakes are also likely to become more decorative. That’s why Brembo already offers a variety of colors for brake calipers, such as the ones in GM vehicles.
