Buick Canada last month announced that it was joining WeChat, the social media platform that originated in China. WeChat has become a fast-emerging global phenomenon, boasting more than 800 million active users around the globe, a number that includes more than 70 million users outside of China.

Buick Canada becomes the first Canadian automotive brand to create a presence on the platform. To celebrate that fact and participate in the global celebration of Chinese New Year, Buick held a number of mall activations throughout Toronto and Vancouver on January 28th.

“Buick has a rich brand history in China as one of the most premium luxury brands that sells over a million cars every year,” said Mike Speranzini, brand director of, Buick in Canada. “Canada brings together people of all kinds of backgrounds who rely on a diverse set of tools to stay connected in their everyday lives. With so many Chinese Canadians active on WeChat, this social media platform was a natural choice for us to continue the Buick brand affiliation here in Canada.”

Buick will utilize its WeChat account to offer fans and customers updates on new products, news stories, promotions, and special events. Plans down the line call for the ability to use WeChat to book a test drive at the nearest dealership, schedule service appointments, connect with other owners, and access additional member perks.

WeChat was originally launched in January 2011; the app is available for free on Android, Apple, BlackBerry, and Windows phones and devices.
