Car Repairs Best Left to the Pros

Some car repairs like an oil change or windshield wiper replacement don’t necessarily require a visit to the mechanic. Many car owners are perfectly happy and skilled enough to handle those repairs themselves in order to save money and time at the repair shop. Some repairs, though, even for the most-accomplished do-it-yourselfers should be handed off to the automotive professionals. Here are five repairs never to DIY, according to Reader’s Digest writer T. Lacoma.

If you suspect your transmission is having issues or your air conditioner isn’t cooling the cabin as well as it should (or not working at all), schedule a service appointment. These systems are exceptionally complex.

Some components, like the clutch, are just not accessible with tools in your garage. So if the clutch needs to be changed, seek professional help.

“You don’t want to disconnect and lift the heavy engine on your own, in your garage, without specialized equipment,” according to Lacoma.

The smell of sulfur or particularly bad oils should send you running to the mechanic.

“A sulfur smell indicates a problem with your catalytic converter. Other nasty smells can indicate burning oil, coolant leaks and other serious problems. While you can buy a diagnostic kit to run tests, these odors indicate serious problems that are best left to a professional who can quickly pinpoint the issue and replace the necessary parts,” advises Lacoma.

The generic equivalent of most products will often do the trick, but when it comes to manufacturer-specific engine parts, it’s best to invest in the name, adds Lacoma.
