The Menlo EV hasn’t been officially unveiled. However, we know that it will be based on the Bolt EV, shown above.

The bow-tie brand has a new electric crossover on the way — the Chevrolet Menlo EV. This new model shares DNA with the Bolt EV, and will compete with similar crossovers — namely the Hyundai Kona and the soon-to-debut Tesla Model Y.

While Chevrolet hasn’t released too many details about its technical specs yet, it’s quite probable that the Menlo is packing the same powertrain you’ll find in the Bolt. We’re expecting it to earn something similar to the Bolt’s 238 miles of electric range on a full charge. It’s reported to produce around 150-174 horsepower

In the coming weeks, the Menlo will be officially unveiled in China, at the Chengdu Auto Show. So far, there are no plans to bring the Menlo to the United States.

Origins of the name

Although the Menlo will be sold in China, it’s got an all-American name that probably gives you flashbacks to your eighth-grade history classes.

The name “Menlo” comes from Menlo Park, where Thomas Edison had his laboratory. Given the fact that Menlo Park was the birthplace of the first commercially viable light bulb, it’s a name that’s fittingly steeped in the history of electricity.

Perhaps the name isn’t just about paying homage to Thomas Edison’s laboratory. Edison had a notorious rivalry with Nikola Tesla, the namesake of Tesla Motors. Perhaps the “Menlo” name is a subtle jab at Tesla, given that the two vehicles are slated to compete on the market. Will history repeat itself, and will the Menlo relegate Tesla to obscurity? Only time will tell.
