Ford Plans First C-V2X Vehicles for China by 2021
Ford has revealed its timeline for producing and deploying its first vehicles equipped with cellular vehicle-to-everything technology. Ford intends to launch C-V2X in China by 2021, allowing its vehicles to communicate directly with the grid, other vehicles, and even pedestrians and cyclists in an effort to make roads safer for all.
“C-V2X technology deployment is key to our ‘In China, For China’ strategy,” said Anning Chen, president and CEO of Ford China. “With China’s fast 5G development, and our own rapid progress in C-V2X, we are working at China speed to equip our vehicles with C-V2X technology. Ford customers in China will be the first to receive the benefits of this smart technology, which will help make local streets safer and less congested.”

In March, Ford conducted its inaugural tests of C-V2X-based driver-assist tech with Multi-access Edge Computing, which enables vehicles in the trial to communicate with pedestrians and non-C-V2X-equipped vehicles leveraging cameras and other city infrastructure. Ford initially began testing C-V2X at the National Intelligent Vehicle Pilot Zone in Shanghai in 2017 and has since taken part in Wuxi’s successful LTE-V2X pilot project.
Ford is also working to proliferate the adoption of 5G cellular technology as a member of the 5G Automobile Association. C-V2X and 5G will be integral technologies for the automaker as it seeks to commercialize fully autonomous vehicle technology by 2021.
After the launch of C-V2X vehicles in China in 2021, Ford anticipates bringing the technology to all of its vehicles sold in the United States beginning in 2022.
