Ford is bringing back its iconic Bronco nameplate, starting with a Baby Bronco unibody compact SUV to be released next year. However, there’s still a great deal of uncertainty over Ford’s plans for naming this vehicle.

In the spring, Ford filed a trademark for the Bronco Scout name, leading to speculation that this would end up being the moniker for a smaller, off-road-ready Bronco model.

Then, in July, a report from Ford Authority based on “sources familiar with future Ford product plans” indicated that this small model would be called the Bronco Adventurer.

Last week, things got even more confusing. Ford Authority reported that the automaker wouldn’t move forward with the Adventurer name after all. Instead, the SUV could be called the Bronco Sport.

Whatever it ends up being named, the Baby/Scout/Adventurer/Sport Bronco should come out sometime in 2020 for the 2021 model year. It will be built on the same platform as the 2020 Ford Escape and 2020 Lincoln Corsair. The main engine is expected to be an EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder, and hybrid and plug-in options could be offered, too.

Based on spy shots, the small Bronco will have blunt, boxy dimensions and a rugged design for versatile off-road performance.

At least two other models are expected to join this small SUV in the new Bronco lineup: a larger body-on-frame SUV and a pickup model.
