While we’ll have to wait until Sunday to get our full first look at Ford’s Mustang-inspired electric SUV and the scoop on what it can do, we won’t have to wait any longer to figure out what to call the thing. We can now effectively set aside the mouthful that is Mustang-inspired electric SUV and start calling this puppy the Mustang Mach-E. That’s right, this SUV isn’t just Mustang-inspired: It’s considered part of the Mustang family.

When it was first announced in January 2018, Ford dubbed its new electric performance SUV the Mach 1. This quickly resulted in backlash from purists who felt it sullied the name of the classic Mustang Mach 1, which led to the name being dropped from consideration altogether. Ford filed for the Mustang Mach-E trademark this past April.

The official name seems to indicate that Ford will spin the Mustang off into its own sub-brand, which it is also expected to do with the Bronco. Among the vehicles that have been rumored to take on the Mustang name down the line are non-electrified crossovers and a four-door sedan.

Ford also announced that it will open up reservations for the Mustang Mach-E after its reveal at 9:30 p.m. EST on Sunday. Interested parties can reserve their Mustang Mach-E, including a limited First Edition, with a $500 refundable deposit. The ordering window will open sometime in 2020.
