The Ford Ranger, built at the Ford Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, topped all light commercial vehicle exports in South Africa in 2018. Ford delivered a total of 68,364 Ranger trucks to export markets around the globe, up 16.2 percent from the total number of exports in 2017. The vast majority of these exports went to European markets, allowing Ford to claim a 27.7 percent market share in 2018.

In total, Ford delivered 98,505 Ranger trucks in 2018 including domestic sales, up 8,383 units from the year prior. Ford closed out 2018 with a record December of 11,091 Ranger trucks delivered in South Africa.

“It was an extremely busy and successful year for our export business in 2018, as we attained our highest-ever production volume for the Ford Ranger and boosted our export volumes by 16.2 percent to retain our undisputed leadership of the light commercial vehicle export segment,” said Neale Hill, Managing Director, Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region.

Ford South Africa delivered 51,500 Ranger trucks to the Blue Oval’s traditional 20 European markets, helping make it the undisputed king of midsize pickup trucks on the continent. The Ranger also helped Ford of Europe attain its best commercial vehicle sales total in 25 years and highest CV market share since 1995.

Production kicked off on the new Ranger at Silverton Assembly Plant in February. The new Ranger lineup will soon grow to include the Ford Ranger Raptor, which will be powered by a 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo engine.
