GM China announces ride-share pilot

General Motors China is introducing a carpooling pilot program for its Shanghai employees that allows them to coordinate trips with one another. The use of an in-house app will create the opportunity for around 700 employees to do their part with regards to cutting emissions and traffic issues.

How it works: drivers can put in the route they would take to work, the time they intend to leave, and how many their vehicle can fit. Other employees can then request to join that employee’s trip, and each accepted party member updates the number of available seats listed in real time.

“The employee carpooling pilot program merges the Internet with intelligent mobile technology,” said Vivian Yu, who is leading GM China Urban Active Projects. “It will not only benefit our team members, but also enable us to test software systems in everyday usage scenarios.”

GM has introduced similar ride-sharing programs for major facilities in the United States and Europe, utilizing OnStar connectivity technology as a platform. GM is expected to make further advances in ride-sharing and mobility solutions throughout 2016.
