General Motors executive Alan Batey is retiring after 40 years with the automaker. Batey is an executive vice president and president of GM’s North American operations.

GM says Barry Engle, currently an executive vice president and president of GM International, will take over for Batey in a new role consolidating responsibilities for North and South American operations. Julian Blissett, GM-SAIC executive vice president for China, will move over to head up all of GM’s operations outside China and the Americas.

“As our company continues to streamline operations, simplify our systems, and refine our global go-to-market strategies, I see Barry as the perfect leader to continue our transformation in each of these markets,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “Alan and his team have achieved record financial performance and created a customer-focused foundation, and we greatly appreciate what he has contributed to GM over his almost 40 years of service across the globe.”

Batey, a United Kingdom native, has worked in a variety of positions throughout his four decades with GM. He’s held management jobs in the UK, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and South Korea; served as U.S. vice president for sales and service; and headed up GM marketing efforts. He was named to his current position in 2014.

Engle has been with GM since 2015. He possesses many years of international management experience, including 13 years with Ford and stints as an auto supplier CEO and a Chrysler dealer.
