About Operation Good Cheer

Operation Good Cheer is a nonprofit that connects Michigan companies with children in need of holiday gifts. Each Christmas season, the org sends participating companies profiles of foster kids who need sponsorship. Company employees then volunteer to sponsor the child of their choice, then shop for a few gifts for them.

After the employees wrap the gifts, they then transport them to Oakland County International Airport on the first Friday in December. Volunteers then load the gifts onto planes for delivery to various foster care agencies around the state.

GM’s involvement in the program

According to senior manager of GM OnStar, Jerry Fullmer, and vice president of GM Global Connected Services, Santiago Chamorro, the GM staff loaded 250 airplanes with nearly 21,000 gifts. The two have helped fly the gifts to their destinations for the past few years via Chamorro’s personal airplane.

Fulmer expressed his personal investment in the project. “The whole event is about providing these kids with the reassurance that someone cares. A lot of these kids have never received presents. […] Now they know there are people who have their back — people who they never met.” It’s a great reminder to show generosity to those who most need it this holiday season.
