Audi bossman Bram Schot has recently bid the combustion-engine TT an unceremonious farewell — and in the same breath, announced a “new emotive model.”

This new model is reported to be in the same price range as the outgoing TT, but the newcomer will be fully electric. Following in the footsteps of the e-tron GT, Audi is trying to forge a new future — one that’s rife with sporty, electric performance cars. In fact, the automaker wants to sell a million electrified vehicles by 2025. Following in the TT’s path, the R8 may also soon be reincarnated as an all-electric model.

Unfortunately, nothing further has been revealed about the TT’s replacement.

Remembering the old TT

Ever since it debuted in 1998, the TT has been an iconic coupe that paved the way for Audi’s future successes. In a European market dominated by dynamic BMWs and luxurious Mercedes models, the TT found a niche with its fresh, Bauhaus-inspired aesthetics and refined details.

For instance, its interior boasted baseball-stitched leather seating. Though it might seem like a small detail, these thick leather stitches set the TT apart from a sea of contrast stitching, colored piping, and embossments.

The TT was also one of the first road vehicles to use a dual-clutch transmission, and in 2003, Audi led the way by offering paddle shifters — which served to bolster its performance-car cred.

Perhaps some of these features will resurface on the TT’s successor. However, there’s one thing that’s almost certainly going the way of the dodo — the roar of its engine. Without that raspy growl that gives way to a smooth, whirring, keening symphony, the Audi TT just won’t be the same.
