Linger on your pale blue cars

Cars can come in any variety of colors, from bright electric yellow to hot pink. Yet, most motorists choose vehicles with more subdued hues of black, white, and gray.

For the 2018 and 2019 model years, consumers appear to be sticking with that established trend. According to coatings supplier BASF, shades of gray and blue are set to be the most popular car colors for 2018 and 2019.

An Expanding Color Palette: Buick to add new colors for the 2018 Cascada

BASF, who supplies exterior coatings to automakers like GM, noted that gray and blue hues for vehicles have grown in popularity during the past year, especially in North America. One reason why is because these colors replicate the aesthetics of digital gadgets and technology.

Some of the most popular colors in BASF’s current library of 65 available hues include “metal’s mettle,” a shade of metallic gray, “kleur,” a deep red, and “centripetal blue,” a subdued dark blue color. As such, many vehicles across the GM lineup have begun to adopt these tones or similar shades as exterior offerings for their 2018 and 2019 models.

BASF predicts that these colors will become even more popular as ride sharing services and autonomous vehicles continue to emerge across the market. After all, the designers of these vehicles would certainly want to evoke a sense of technological advancement throughout the exterior.

The taste in exterior car colors shifts slightly for other regions of the world. Bright blues and beiges are currently big in the certain parts of Asia, while various shades of gray reign supreme throughout most of Europe.

For the most part, though, drivers worldwide seem to be selecting more subdued colors for their cars. So, don’t expect to suddenly see bright splashes of colors in parking lots anytime soon.
