A tired traveler is a cranky traveler, and as any parent knows, cranky kids can obliterate the fun intended by a road trip. And sometimes it’s just not a quality eight hours at night you need to protect for your weary traveler — if you’re traveling with little ones, naps are necessary to ward off tantrums and meltdowns. How can you safeguard sleep for your kids when you’re leaving structure behind (and their beds) for an adventurous road trip?

According to certified child sleep consultant Joleen Dilk Salyn, founder of BabySleep101.com, if your child is on a nap schedule, leaving after his morning nap will get your trip off on the right wheel.

To increase your child’s willingness to nap in the car despite all the excitement of the journey, Salyn recommends taking some comforts from home with you, like your kid’s white noise machine and favorite toy and create a darker cabin with portable blackout window blinds. If you know your child will be too excited about the car ride to fall asleep despite your best efforts to create a nap zone on wheels, she suggests timing your arrival time to your kid’s naptime. If naps are a no-go or your child didn’t sleep well even if he did nap for a bit, move bedtime up a bit to accommodate for the loss of zzz’s.

It’s also vital to your child’s well-being to be aware when overtiredness might be setting in.

“When your child is overtired, you’ll find they’re often even more resistant to sleeping somewhere new, going along with new routines, and interacting with new people,” Salyn writes.
