Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, is a theme park in flux at the moment. The park is moving away from its original concept as a working movie studio as it adds new themed areas, such as the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Even the marquee attraction of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, The Great Movie Ride, recently shut down back in 2017. In its place, Disney plans to open a first-of-its-kind attraction, starring the big cheese himself: Mickey Mouse.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is set to open later this year.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse have shown up in a variety of shows at the Disney theme parks over the years. Yet, they have never received a ride to call all their own.

That all changes with Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Both mice will serve as the stars of this upcoming attraction.

The attraction, based on the latest incarnation of Mickey Mouse animated shorts, will begin at the premiere of a new Mickey Mouse cartoon. However, guests will soon find themselves transported out of the theater and into the cartoon itself.

Mickey and Minnie hit the road in a snazzy car on their way to a relaxing picnic. The idyllic drive doesn’t stay serene for long, as they soon encounter a train operated by Goofy, with guests in tow. What results is described as a “wacky, wild ride.”

So, how will the team at Disney bring the two-dimensional characters of the Mickey Mouse shorts to life? The company is supposedly working on a new technology called 2 ½ -D, which will require no 3-D glasses. Disney is reportedly working with Panasonic to meet the visual requirements of that technology.

Although Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway has yet to open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, word on the street is that Disney already has plans in place to bring the ride to the Toontown section of Disneyland. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is currently set to open this fall, around the same time that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is slated to open at the park.

If you’ve ever dreamed of joining Mickey, Minnie, and all their pals for an exciting countryside drive, you won’t have to wait much longer for these dreams to come true.
