Death, taxes, the Ford Mustang outselling every other sports coupe on planet Earth.

As certain as the rising sun (though these days, maybe it’s not so safe to take something like that for granted), the Ford Mustang was the world’s bestselling sports car in 2019, marking five straight years that the pony has held down the title of world’s most popular sports coupe. Ford announced the feat on April 17, the 56th anniversary of the Mustang’s world premiere.

Ford sold 102,090 Mustang cars last year, bringing total sales for the sixth-generation Mustang to 633,000 since its 2014 launch. Key to its six-figure sales is the wide range of variations available on the market, including the new-for-2020 Shelby GT500 and likely soon-to-be-discontinued versions like the Shelby GT350 and Mustang Bullitt.

While the Mustang has the reputation of being an American icon, its performance in various major international markets is key to its dominance. Last year, Mustang sales increased 33 percent in Germany and nearly 50 percent in both Poland and France. Total sales in Europe increased 3 percent in 2019 at 9,900 Mustangs total across the traditional 20 markets.

The Mustang is on track to repeat as the world’s bestselling sports car again this year, and it’s positioned to continue holding down that throne for years to come. While the Shelby GT350 and Bullitt are both slated to leave the lineup, the rumor is that they will be replaced by the returning Mach 1. Ford is also launching its all-electric Mustang Mach-E at the end of the year, and despite protestations about its naming, it will only help bolster Mustang sales even more. Beyond that, Ford is expecting to launch the seventh-generation Mustang in 2022, which should introduce the first-ever Mustang Hybrid.
