New McConaughey Commercials Compare 2017 MKZ to Shaving, Diving into Pools Fully-Clothed

It was an inevitability that could be surmised the moment the new face of the MKZ broke cover last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Monday marked the roll-out of three new commercials promoting its new sedan, all of which star brand spokesman, Oscar-winner, and all-around hunk Matthew McConaughey.

This go-round, our director is J.C. Chandor. While the name may be relatively unknown to even the most astute film buffs, particularly when compared to the likes of Nicolas Winding Refn and Gus Van Sant, he is ostensibly three-for-three as a feature director. His first film was 2011’s Margin Call, followed by 2013’s All Is Lost and 2014’s A Most Violent Year.

The commercials orbit around a particular refrain: “It’s like that.” In this case, “it” is driving the 2017 MKZ and “that” is a comparatively exciting or refreshing activity or feeling. “Like,” for those of you wondering, is a word that indicates the relationship between “it” and “that.” You call that a preposition, by the way.

In the three presented examples, “it” (driving the 2017 Lincoln MKZ) is like, in no particular order, a fresh shave, listening to a live cover of “Midnight Rider,” and jumping into a pool in a suit. So, in case you’re wondering, it is indeed like those things. Or at least that’s what Lincoln, Chandor, and McConaughey think. Your mileage may vary.

Sadly, McConaughey is taciturn throughout the proceedings, so these ads will almost certainly pass without parody. Which, come to think of it, probably isn’t the worst thing in the world. Check out the ads—“Shave,” “Midnight,” and “Ensemble”—below:
