Upgrades to the new Outlander PHEV
According to AutoGuide, Mitsubishi has filed documents detailing its 2021 lineup with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The next-generation Outlander PHEV is a part of that lineup, promising an improved powertrain.
The Outlander PHEV currently has an impressive PHEV system that utilizes twin electric motors as well as the 2.0-liter MIVEC DOHC four-cylinder engine. This gas engine delivers 117 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque.
The upcoming SUV is set to have a 2.4-liter engine that reaches 126 horsepower. The battery will also increase from a 12-kWh unit to a 13.8-kWh unit. In addition, the rear electric motor will now produce 93 horsepower, matching the power in Europe.
There’s still much left up in the air about the new Outlander PHEV. However, if it borrows more elements from the international variants, it will have upgraded Snow and Sport modes for better handling in different road conditions. The model in Japan also offers an EV range stretching from 37.8 miles to 40.4 miles, so there’s hope that the U.S. model may increase its range, which is currently 22 miles.
Based on the filed paperwork, the next-generation Outlander is expected to become larger in size. It will also have a similar look to the Engelberg Tourer concept, gaining a greater rear roof spoiler, newly-shaped greenhouse, and vertical headlights.
