New Turbo Engine Coming to 2022 Terrain and Equinox
In July, news broke that two of General Motors’ most popular vehicles would be losing an engine option. The powerful 2.0-liter I4 LTG turbocharged engine had been a staple of both the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox for some time. However, the decision was made to drop the engine for the two vehicles going forward. Over two months later, it has been confirmed that a new turbo engine will be coming to the Terrain and Equinox’s refreshed 2022 models.

A look at the new turbo engine option
The introduction of a new turbo engine option for the Terrain and Equinox was a long time in the making. The original plan was to relaunch both GM vehicles as refreshed models for the 2021 model year. Unfortunately, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, GM’s plans needed to change. Ultimately, its release schedule was pushed back one year, bumping the new vehicles — and their new engine option — to 2022.
But while the wait for this new turbocharged engine will be a long one, a look at its specs reveals that it’ll be well worth it.
GM’s replacement option for the Terrain and Equinox will, like its predecessor, be a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4. However, instead of being an LTG, the new option will be an LSY. The change is likely due to this type of I4 producing fewer emissions. In addition to being cleaner, the LSY also offers the driver more refined power delivery. It’s also no slouch; the turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 LSY will be able produce an impressive 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft or torque. This means that a 2022 Terrain or Equinox equipped with this engine will be able to match the power and speed of the Cadillac XT4.

The refreshed GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox will likely hit dealerships late next year. Until then, their 2021 models will feature only one engine option: the 1.5-liter I4 LYX.
