One step closer towards AV deployment

Back in January 2018, GM released a petition to deploy a set number of AVs on U.S. roads. If the NHTSA approves it, the petition will legitimize GM and other automakers to produce up to 2,500 AVs each.

Currently, the automaker is discussing the petition and its future AV ambitions with NHTSA. GM is poised to make some headway on the petition sometime in the near future, as NHTSA administrator James Owens articulates. He expressed confidence that the organization would provide GM with an answer in 2020 — then the brand can finally start turning its AV goals into a reality.

Present challenges

If you’ve been staying on top of driverless-vehicle headlines, you’re likely aware that GM’s previous milestones for AV tech have been delayed. This past July, GM Cruise released a new estimated launch date for its fleet of AV taxis in San Francisco. At the time of writing, GM is still performing more testing of AV models before it officially releases them for commercial use.

It will be interesting to see how soon the NHTSA will announce its decision on GM’s petition. After all, GM isn’t the only automaker with ambitious AV goals for 2020. Learn more about the brand’s other collaborations by checking out this article here.
