The electrified powertrain in the Nissan Serena earned a notable distinction for its innovative engineering, the 2019 Technology of the Year award. This title handed out by the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan highlights the Serena minivan’s available e-POWER system, which helps the model to deliver impressive fuel efficiency and incredible value to its drivers.

Nissan created an electrified vehicle with excellent fuel efficiency at low costs by using existing in-house products to comprise core components such as the engine and battery,” the committee said in a statement. “Taking full advantage of the regenerative brake system, the e-POWER system enables one-pedal operation, easing driver workload and hence making driving more enjoyable.”

e-POWER combines the power of a 3.5-liter gasoline engine to charge the Serena’s battery while the wheels are manipulated by the model’s electric motor. February of this year marked Serena’s adoption of the system, the second model to do so.

Approximately 40 percent of drivers in Japan who select the Serena minivan opt for the fuel-efficient, cutting-edge powertrain, which earns a best-in-class rating — 26.2 km/L.

The Serena’s impressive fuel efficiency is well-complemented by the smooth performance and quiet interior of the minivan, making it a joyful experience for drivers and their passengers.

“In addition to the system’s powerful acceleration, its e-POWER Drive mode offers the convenience of being able to speed up or decelerate by using only the accelerator pedal. Using the e-POWER Drive mode, stress is relieved as brake pedal application decreases by nearly 70 percent,” reports the automaker.
