Packing for a road trip is complicated. No matter how much cargo space your vehicle boasts, the luggage, gear, and games necessary for your road adventure seem to fill every inch, which means leaving room for a cooler isn’t always possible. But you and your passengers have to eat, right? Isn’t snacking on the road one of the best parts of a road trip? Satisfy your road trip cravings without sacrificing cargo space for a cooler by snacking on the following suggestions.

Dried fruit, raisins, and fruit leather are packed with fiber and don’t require refrigeration, according to USA Today writer Kiraney Cummins. She adds that these treats tend to stay sweet and good to eat for weeks, or even months.

If you and your family prefer fresh produce, Cummins recommends packing apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes, all of which resist bruising.

Chips are a classic road trip staple but resist the urge to indulge in chips loaded with salt and oil. There are healthier options on the market like Trader Joe’s Roasted Plantain Chips, a favorite of Travel + Leisure writer Richelle Szypulski.

“I love Trader Joe’s plantain chips in particular because other brands’ chips are often sweet, and these are salty, making them an excellent potato chip alternative. These are made with sunflower oil — mostly unsaturated fat — instead of palm oil or palm olein — largely saturated fat. Plus, they’ve got loads of potassium and zero grams of sugar,” she writes.

Granola bars are also road-trip friendly snacks that don’t need to stay cool. Be sure to read the labels before you buy as some bars boast amounts of sugar, salt, and fat to rival your favorite candy bar.
