OnStar with 4G LTE Launches Next Month
Starting in June, drivers of select GM vehicles will have access to OnStar with 4G LTE. Drivers will get a free three-month trial period (or three gigabytes, whichever comes first).
The 2015 Malibu will be the first vehicle to claim the updated tech, but more than 30 other Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles will follow suit. Customers with access to OnStar with 4G LTE will have plenty to explore from inside the car, with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot that can pair up to seven devices (which might save annoyed parents from the “I’m not touching you” business of road trips from the past). The 4G LTE connectivity will also give drivers enhanced access to preexisting safety and security services.
“Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac will be the first vehicle brands to market with 4G LTE connectivity offered on such a broad scale, and we’re excited to give millions of customers an opportunity to explore the technology without paying extra for a data plan for three months or three gigabytes,” said OnStar President, Mary Chan. “Later this year, we will begin to offer data plans and our customers will be able to connect for as little as $5 per month.”
That $5 a month will get OnStar subscribers 200 MB. For $15, they’ll get 1 GB; for $30, 3 GB; and for $50, 5 GB. Non-subscribers will have to shell out $10, $20, $30, or $50, respectively.
