[wptab name=”New VP of Global Design Reveals Concepts”]It was announced on Thursday that Ed Welburn will retire on July 1st after 44 years with GM, and that his replacement in the role of vice president of General Motors Global Design would be current VP of GM International Design Michael Simcoe.

Last month, Simcoe helped unveil the Chevrolet Colorado Xtreme and Trailblazer Premier at the 37th Bangkok International Motor Show in Thailand. Both vehicles indicated future design directions for both the Chevrolet and Holden brands, as well as Simcoe’s prowess for overseeing design teams and enabling them to produce stunning results. Both vehicles were built at the GM Australia Design Centre in Port Melbourne, Australia.

Simcoe introduced both the Colorado and Trailblazer during the show, and outlined the intention to ensure that both show vehicles represent new ideas from the automaker.

“We’re calling on Chevrolet’s rich history and know-how to demonstrate our leadership in these segments and announcing where we hope to take these exciting vehicles in the near future,” Simcoe said. “Our focus here was about pushing these vehicles in two completely different directions, ensuring they are standalone vehicles in their own right. It is great to have the opportunity to showcase design possibilities today that could be developed and seen in the cars and trucks of tomorrow.”

The Colorado Xtreme is presented in a matte orange hue called “Furness,” and it features a front Safari Bar with integrated LED bar and winch; an integrated rear step and tow bar; 18-inch all-terrain mud tires; integrated hood vent; Sports bar with styled in-fill panel; roll bar; graphics pack; and a custom tub liner with adjustable tie down tracks, integrated tool holders, and integrated spare wheel mount.

“Inspiration for the truck came from many sources, in particular we looked at the US market where Chevrolet leads the way as far as truck design,” Simcoe noted. “By looking at the Xtreme it’s clear that the North American market influenced many of the styling cues. The end result is a serious pick up with no compromise.”

The Trailblazer Premier is shown in “Velocity” blue, and it features 22-inch wheels and tires, rear spoiler, rear fascia protector, integrated side step with chrome molding, other chrome details, and interior features including premium leather seating and two-tone instrument panel inserts with detail stitching.

“Unlike the Colorado Xtreme, which is loud and tough, the Trailblazer Premier is subtle and softer in terms of color and materials, emphasized with the use of bright chrome and premium materials such as Australian timber which was hand-picked and crafted,” Simcoe added.[/wptab][wptab name=”Gallery: Chevy Colorado Xtreme”]
