Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is placing a lot of faith in the relaunch of the Alfa Romeo brand for the North American market. In doing so, it has put a lot of money toward that investment. The company is hoping that sales for the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio would help eliminate some of that cost. However, it seems that plans for a model slotted between the Giulia and the Stelvio has just hit a dead end.
FCA recently canceled plans for an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sport Wagon.

This Giulia Sport Wagon, rumored to be a bulkier version of the Giulia sedan, was lined up to be the next production model for the Alfa Romeo brand, one of eight Alfa Romeo vehicles in the works. Alfa Romeo’s sports wagon was designed to be a direct competitor to other luxury vehicles in its class, such as the BMW 3-Series Sports Wagon.
Furthermore, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sport Wagon was previously scheduled to make its official debut at the Geneva Auto Show. Nevertheless, it seems that the Sport Wagon’s run was cut short before it ever truly began.
So what was the reasoning behind the model’s cancellation? According to sources from Alfa Romeo, the company was worried that the Giulia Sport Wagon would be too similar to the Stelvio, and thus would deter potential buyers from that particular model.
“We have decided not to make a Giulia Sport Wagon,” states Alfredo Altavilla, the head of Fiat Chrysler’s European, Middle Eastern, and African markets. “Do we really need it if the SUV Stelvio handles so well? Probably not. With our fine tuning, Stelvio can interest all those people who might have been interested [in the sport wagon].”

With one less vehicle in development for Alfa Romeo, the company will rely more than ever upon the success of the Stelvio SUV and the Giulia sedan.
