The South Africa National Team returned victorious to its home country in March after a record showing in the Special Olympics Summer World Games. The team arrived in Johannesburg with 62 medals in tow, including 35 gold, 15 silver, and 12 bronze.

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa pledged the very nice sum of US$69,000 (R1 million South African Rand) to help cover the expenses for the team’s athletes in their travels to Abu Dhabi.

“We are extremely proud of the South African National Team and their superb achievements this year,” said Minesh Bhagaloo, Communications Manager, Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region. “It is a privilege to be associated with the Special Olympics, and to have made it possible for these athletes to attend the games and shine on the international stage. That they managed to bring home a record number of medals is the icing on the cake for these athletes, along with the life-changing experiences they gained and friendships made along the way.”

Maybe the true gold medals that the South African National Team earned were the friendships they made along the way. Well, they also won plenty of actual gold medals, but you know what we’re trying to say.

The games that Team South Africa participated in during the 2019 Special Olympics Summer World Games include football, table tennis, open-water swimming, and golf. Additional events that took place during this year’s games include complementary Healthy Athletes screenings, a Law Enforcement Torch Run, and a Global Youth Summit.
