My family would always go to the drive-thru light displays. Those were definitely cooler back before bright running lights were standard on cars… (I just made myself sound really old, didn’t I?)

It wasn’t a yearly tradition, but I vividly remember the times we drove out to Clifton Mill to see the Christmas light show. There’s something surreal about driving out to the middle of nowhere, at night, in the dead of winter, to be greeted with one of the areas most famous and dazzling Christmas light displays. The fun didn’t stop there — I was a super weird kid, so I brought my favorite G.I. Joe along for the ride and took pictures of him in the snow. But I was a tween, and this was back in the days of film cameras. Basically, I had no idea that flash photography, snow, and Christmas lights wouldn’t play well together. The pictures turned out terrible, but at least I have the memories!

Every year, my family drives through Christmas light displays. The best display will always be “Fantasy In Lights,” which is at the Callaway Resort & Gardens in Georgia. That display has so many beautiful and creative scenes set to music.

When I was really little, my family and I would put on pajamas, put on coats, then head to the car. We’d drive around the neighborhoods near our house for a good couple of hours listening to the “Christmas with The Chipmunks” (good old 90s kid music…). The annoyingly-shrill voices of The Chipmunks still haunt me to this day, but it was an overall great memory from Christmases past.
