FCA proves that helping the local community is as easy as riding a bike

One of the quintessential images of summer is the sight of children riding bikes up and down the street. Unfortunately, not all families can afford to purchase bikes, especially in the Detroit Metropolitan area.

That’s where FCA came in to lend a hand. Working together with the Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative and Communities In Schools of Metropolitan Detroit, FCA recently hosted its third annual “Big Bike and Book Giveaway Day”.

Held on June 7 at the Immanuel Lutheran Chruch, the “Big Bike and Book Giveaway Day” brought together 50 employees from FCA’s Motor Citizens volunteer program. These volunteers helped distribute bicycles, helmets, and books provided by FCA to 150 students from throughout the Detroit area.

Communities In Schools of Metropolitan Detroit helped select students in the area who were in need of additional transportation and education during the summer. Meanwhile, the Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative established bike paths throughout the area.

FCA is helping to make a bright summer even brighter for kids in Detroit

“We are delighted to again partner with CIS and DECC to celebrate the achievement of Detroit’s elementary and middle school students through the ‘Big Bike and Book Giveaway Day’,” said Lesley Slavitt, Head of Civic Engagement for FCA US LLC and CEO of the FCA Foundation. “This great event is another example of the dedication to community service that drives FCA employees to volunteer.”

The program, designed to reward children for improvements in attendance, behavior, and performance during the school year, had a profound effect on students in the region and their families.

“I know my daughter (Talayah) is going to ride the bike around our neighborhood every day after school,” wrote Tanikka Mabene in a thank-you note to FCA. “I am thanking you not only for myself, but on behalf of every parent and student that was able to receive one of the bikes. We greatly appreciate what you are doing for the students at Hamilton Academy!”
