The Toyota 4Runner is already one of the most rugged vehicles not just in the Toyota lineup but in North America, and for 2020, it’s getting a new Venture Edition that adds even more flair and utility to match its capability.

New edition or not, however, the 4Runner also benefits from a number of updates. Every model now comes with a standard 8-inch touch-screen multimedia system that includes eight speakers, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. This is especially notable because Toyota has in the past been reluctant to provide CarPlay smartphone support, and especially Android Auto.

Toyota Safety Sense P is also standard on all 2020 4Runner models. It includes an autonomous emergency braking system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and high-speed dynamic radar cruise control.

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner uses body-on-frame construction and boasts a part-time 4WD system, two-speed transfer case, and selectable gear locker to provide excellent traction over difficult terrain. Other off-road tools include standard crawl control, active traction control, and multi-terrain select.

New for 2020, the 4Runner Venture Edition is based on the 4Runner Off-Road Premium, though it lacks that model’s C-pillar to enhance its minimalist look. It comes with a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack that supports additional top-roof storage with a tray that’s 52 inches long, 48 inches wide, and 6.5 inches high. And because it’s made with heavy-duty steel, you can bet it’ll be able to handle heavy loads even as you put the 4Runner through its paces.

Exclusive exterior touches for the Venture Edition include gunmetal-colored, 17-inch TRD wheels, black logos and badging, and black accents for the door handles, rear spoiler, and outer mirrors. Inside, it gets standard all-weather floor mats for additional protection from the elements, as well as a rear cargo mat, and an available rear sliding cargo deck.
