Long associated with hybrid technology, Toyota has taken more time than some competitors to embrace fully electric vehicles. The manufacturer only entered the segment in 2022 with the launch of the bZ4X, its first battery-powered model.

This new Highlander arrives as part of a broader push. Faced with rising demand and regulatory pressure, particularly in Europe, Toyota is accelerating its electric rollout while also tailoring new products for the North American market.

A Strategic Shift After Years of Hesitation

Toyota’s early leadership in hybrid technology, introduced with the Prius in 1997, long shaped its approach to electrification. The company prioritized hybrid systems across its lineup before committing to fully electric models.

That stance has evolved. According to Auto Journal, Toyota plans to introduce three additional electric vehicles in 2025: the CH-R+ in the C segment, the bZ4X Touring in the D segment, and the Urban Cruiser in the B segment. These launches reflect both market expectations and regulatory frameworks, including European policies targeting the end of combustion engine sales.

At the same time, Toyota is expanding its ambitions beyond Europe, with the electric Highlander specifically developed for the United States.

A Spacious Three-Row SUV with a Familiar Design Language

The electric Highlander stands out primarily for its size and interior layout. Measuring 5.03 meters in length, it adopts a three-row configuration with a 2+2+3 seating arrangement.

The design features angular lines and full-width light strips at both the front and rear, in line with recent Toyota models. Inside, the dashboard integrates a 14-inch central touchscreen alongside a 12.3-inch digital instrument display.

The cabin emphasizes space and practicality. The 3.04-meter wheelbase provides generous legroom for second-row passengers, while the third row includes three sliding and electrically folding seats. Storage is also a focus, with a large central armrest incorporating USB-C ports and wireless charging. Maximum cargo capacity reaches 1,290 liters.

Two Powertrains and up to 515 Kilometers of Range

Built on the TNGA-K platform, the electric Highlander will be available with two drivetrain options. The front-wheel-drive version produces 224 horsepower and uses a 77 kWh battery, offering a range of around 462 kilometers.

The all-wheel-drive variant increases output to 343 horsepower and can be paired with a larger 95.8 kWh battery, extending the range to 515 kilometers. Toyota also announces a charging time from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes, without specifying the exact configuration concerned.

Although designed primarily for North America, the model’s future in other markets remains unclear. Similar statements have been made in the past before certain models eventually reached Europe, leaving the situation open.
