Toyota Among America’s Most Reliable Car Brands—Again
Toyota cars may never get to the top of an auto enthusiast’s shopping list, but there’s a reason they’re among the best-selling vehicles in the world: people can count on them.
Consumer Reports has published its annual rankings of the most reliable car brands in America and, surprise surprise, Toyota is once again near the very top of that list. At this point, it’s kind of a given.
Consumer Reports has more than 500,000 subscribers, which gives it a rather large sample from which to draw statistics about cars. It polled its subscribers about the problems they experienced with their vehicles across 17 categories ranging from squealing brakes to transmission failures.

It then used the data it received, compiled it with its own test-track findings, and looked at each brand’s history of reliability as far back as 16 years to create a Predicted Reliability Score that ranks each automaker based on how likely they are to—well, you guessed it—be reliable.
Out of 100, the most reliable brand is Lexus (notably, Toyota’s luxury brand) with a score of 86, followed by Toyota itself with 78 points. All of the brands in the top 14 are either German or Asian, with the exception of Buick in third place. Consumer Reports attributes Toyota’s success to “[using] tried-and-true methods to build its vehicles, taking a conservative, evolutionary approach.”
Among the 10 most reliable cars are two Toyotas, with the Toyota Prius topping them all. That’s actually surprising, given that hybrid cars tend to have more hiccups than their more straightforward, ICE-powered counterparts—but that’s what happens when you refine and improve a hybrid system for nearly two decades as Toyota has done with the Prius.
