Toyota Selects 240 Athletes for Global Tokyo 2020 Team
Toyota has launched a new page on its global website dedicated to supporting and sharing the stories of 240 “Global Team Toyota Athletes” from 43 countries and areas around the world, with possibly more to come.
The web page tracks the athletes’ journey to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo and “will be updated as things move closer to the Games, such as who qualifies to compete in Tokyo 2020.”
Though many of the selected athletes are also Toyota employees, many are also not. Toyota says it includes athletes that were selected because they share Toyota’s philosophy and values — lofty ideals such as teamwork, humility, sincerity, and continuous improvement.
“The new page also conveys Toyota’s “Start Your Impossible” global corporate initiative, a message that encapsulates Toyota’s strong desire to recognize and help with challenges faced by all,” Toyota said in a press release, before drawing the obligatory comparisons to the challenges of the auto industry.
Helping All: Toyota awards scholarships to 100 high school graduates
As the worldwide partner of Tokyo 2020, Toyota has been heavily involved in the preparation of the Games, designing leading-edge mobility vehicles and robots that can not just assist people during the event but also represent the automaker’s commitment to “mobility for all.” One of the automaker’s goals is also to provide a fleet fully comprised of electrified vehicles.
Toyota’s involvement in sports goes back to the founding of the company in 1937, when it created its own sports club. In a way, a sports game is like a microcosm of life. A game ebbs and flows, testing athletes’ ability to overcome both physical and psychological challenges.
Toyota says it “aims to spread the wonder of sports to as many people as possible,” and the new page that highlights the 240 athletes is just one part of that. It also has a page for general Olympic, Paralympic and sports information, a page for athlete interviews and stories, and a page highlighting Paralympic athletes and the mobility tech the company is developing.
