The prototype is believed to be the upcoming ID.3 Neo GTI, a hotter version of Volkswagen’s recently introduced electric hatchback. The vehicle was captured with minimal camouflage, offering an early look at several design changes expected to distinguish it from the standard model.

Volkswagen is expanding its electric performance portfolio at a time when the GTI name remains one of the brand’s most recognizable badges. The arrival of electric GTI variants marks a significant step in transferring that identity to the company’s next generation of battery-powered vehicles.

Volkswagen has not yet officially announced the ID.3 Neo GTI. The publication reported that the model was spotted testing in Germany and is expected to become the next electric GTI following the launch of the ID. Polo GTI.

Testing Prototype Reveals Subtle Exterior Changes

The newly photographed prototype appears closely related to the standard ID.3 Neo that Volkswagen unveiled in April. The company described the upgraded ID.3 Neo as the first “true Volkswagen,” featuring a new drive system, a new name, and revised styling inside and out.

Images published by ForoElectricos show only minor visual differences between the prototype and the regular model. Among the changes visible on the test vehicle are modified front and rear bumpers, performance-oriented brakes, and a set of unique wheels.

The overall silhouette remains consistent with the standard ID.3 Neo, suggesting Volkswagen has focused its efforts on performance-oriented enhancements rather than a major redesign.

Rear-Wheel-Drive Layout and More Powerful Electric Motor

One of the key distinctions between Volkswagen’s two electric GTI models concerns their drivetrain configurations.

While the ID. Polo GTI uses a front-mounted electric motor producing 166 kW (222 hp), the ID.3 Neo GTI is expected to retain a rear-wheel-drive setup. According to Electrek, the performance version is anticipated to use Volkswagen’s most powerful drive unit, delivering 240 kW (322 hp).

For comparison, the standard ID.3 Neo will be offered with three electric drive configurations rated at 125 kW (167 hp), 140 kW (187 hp), and 170 kW (228 hp).

The ID. Polo GTI’s powertrain enables a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration time of 6.8 seconds, according to the information released by Volkswagen.

Interior Adopts Volkswagen’s Latest Cabin Design

Inside, the ID.3 Neo GTI is expected to follow the design direction introduced with the standard ID.3 Neo. Volkswagen has already confirmed an updated cabin layout featuring a revised infotainment system and the return of additional physical controls.

The setup includes a 10.25-inch (26 cm) Digital Cockpit and a 12.9-inch central touchscreen display. According to Electrek, the GTI version is also expected to receive dedicated GTI badging, a GTI sports steering wheel, and premium sports seats similar to those fitted in the ID. Polo GTI.

The standard ID.3 Neo offers a WLTP driving range of up to 630 km (391 miles) when equipped with the larger 79 kWh battery.

Volkswagen is scheduled to launch the ID.3 Neo in July. More information about the GTI variant is expected to emerge soon. Meanwhile, the ID. Polo GTI is set to go on sale this fall in Germany with a starting price below €39,000 ($45,000).
