Esurance Study Asks: When Do You Fill Up Your Gas Tank?
Be honest. How many times have you gotten to the point where you thought you would run out of gas before getting to the nearest station? Are you one of those people who waits until it’s absolutely necessary to fill up? Or do you play it safe and keep your tank at a reasonable level at all times? Esurance recently conducted a survey that helped explain why Americans wait so long to do this essential task.
Save With CPO: Buying a certified pre-owned vehicle could save you money for the gas pump
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, Esurance discovered that those who tend to wait as long as possible to fill up are between the ages of 18-34. On the flip side, 51 percent of the respondents aged 55 or older said they fill up when their car’s tank reaches its halfway point. After age, the second factor that was considered was money. According to the survey, 19 percent said they often look for cheaper options while 11 percent said they couldn’t afford a full tank of gas.
While gas prices are not as high as they were between 2011 and 2014, they’re still higher than any time before the millennium. In May of this year, the average price was $2.85, which was a 27 percent increase from January. The average price of gas in 1989 — when those 55-year-old boomers were 25 — was sitting pretty at $1 per gallon, which is estimated to equal $1.89 today.
Tires Matter: Keep your car’s tires in good shape to increase fuel efficiency
Time was another factor for people not stopping to fill up, with 26 percent of drivers claiming that it’s inconvenient to do so. Considering some drivers, especially those who also fall in the 18-34 age range, might be rushing to get to their second or third job to make ends meet, it makes perfect sense. However, it would probably be a little more inconvenient to get stranded on the side of the highway with an empty gas tank. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
