Mercedes-Benz Sales Increase 3.9% During the First Quarter of 2017
Mercedes makes its way to the top of the luxury market during the first quarter of 2017, even surpassing BMW
BMW used to be the undisputed leader of luxury in the North American automotive scene. However, Mercedes-Benz has quickly caught up to its fellow German automaker. Now, at the end of March, Mercedes has surpassed BMW in terms of overall sales.
Mercedes-Benz sold 87,635 vehicles during the first quarter of 2017, accounting for a 3.9% increase in sales.
That total sales number places Mercedes above its chief rival BMW. At the end of the first quarter, BMW sold 81,933 vehicles.
During the month of March itself, 29,092 Mercedes models were sold. This is a 3.3% increase in sales compared to the 28,164 Mercedes vehicles sold in March 2016.
The best-selling vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz lineup was undoubtedly the C-Class. The luxury sedan reached a sales figure of 8,021 units last month, a 20.5% increase in sales compared to the year before.
Furthermore, the best sales performance change for Mercedes came in the form of the Mercedes-Benz GLS. The newest Mercedes SUV sold 2,938 units in March, compared to the 858 units sold this time last year.
Not all of the Mercedes models saw sales increases, however. The Mercedes CLA experienced a sales decline of 51.9% compared to March of 2016.
Meanwhile, Smart sales were a bit more disappointing. The sub-brand of Mercedes experienced an 18.8% sales decline between March of 2016 and March of 2017.
Altogether, the Mercedes-Benz company sold 32,352 vehicle units last month. This accounts for a 2% increase in sales compared to March of last year.
Year-to-date, the Mercedes brand proper has sold 79,141 vehicles this quarter, a 4.5% increase compared to the 75,769 vehicles it sold during the first quarter of 2016. However, the sale of Smart vehicles has experienced a steady decline, with an overall 18.4% reduction.
Nevertheless, as long as the collection of cars and crossovers from Mercedes-Benz continues to be popular, then the luxury brand might just stay on top.
