The BMW 7 Series

Earlier this week, BMW announced that the BMW 7 Series would be the next in the luxury automaker’s lineup to feature BMW Advanced Diesel technology here in the United States. The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive Sedan, as it’s called, will debut next week at the Chicago Auto Show.

Powered by a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel engine that features xDrive (BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system), the all-new 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive will arrive in showrooms starting this spring with an MSRP of $83,425, including $925 for destination and handling. The diesel powertrain puts out 255 hp at 4,000 rpm and generates 413 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 – 3,000 rpm, and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Expect the 7 Series diesel to rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds.

Fuel economy estimates are not yet available, but according to the automaker, we can count on a 25 – 30 percent increase in efficiency for the diesel model, based on trends set by other BMW models and their diesel counterparts. Driving Dynamics Control, featuring Eco Pro mode, as well as Auto Start/Stop tech, will also contribute to increased fuel efficiency.

The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive is certainly not the automaker’s first American diesel option, and we wouldn’t expect it to be the last. The 7 series model joins an all-star cast, including the 328d and 328d xDrive Sedans, the 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, the 535d and 535d xDrive Sedans, and the X5 xDrive35d Sports Activity Vehicle.
