2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Exterior
Elegant, sleek, luxurious. No other words describe the exterior (or the interior, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves) of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, whether it’s the coupe or the sedan. The sedan stands at just 58.7 inches, keeping low to the ground. The S-Class sedan is 206.5 inches in length and 83.9 in width, with a wheelbase of 124.6 inches. The 2016 S-Class coupe, however, is even shorter in height and length, at 55.8 inches and 197.9 inches. It’s also less wide (83.0 inches) and has a smaller wheelbase (115.9 inches).

2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Performance
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is available with a variety of powertrains and drivetrains. The S550 sedan and the S550 4MATIC sedan both benefit from a 4.7-liter biturbo V8, good for 449 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. In both models, the engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The lone distinction is that the 4MATIC is built on an all-wheel-drive architecture, while the S550 is a rear-wheel-drive sedan. The S550 coupe is motivated by the same engine for the same output, while the S550 Plug-In Hybrid sedan takes its power (329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque) from a 3.0-liter V6 with a hybrid electric motor.
The S600 sedan relies on a 6.0-liter biturbo V12, coupled with a seven-speed automatic, to deliver 523 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque.
The rear-wheel-drive AMG S63 4MATIC sedan and coupe both sport a 5.5-liter AMG biturbo engine under the hood. The engine is mated to a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT automatic transmission and produces 577 horsepower and 644 lb-ft of torque. The ultimate machines, however, are the AMG S65 sedan and coupe, both of which take power from a handcrafted 6.0-liter AMG biturbo V12, paired with the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT automatic tranny and laying down 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.
2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Efficiency
Given the power behind the engines, it’s no surprise that fuel economy for the S-Class is noticeably low. The 4.7-liter biturbo V8 yields 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Even the plug-in hybrid powertrain only gets 30 mpg on the highway (24 in the city). It only gets worse from there. The 5.5-liter AMG biturbo V8 yields 15 in the city and 23 on the highway, and the 6.0-liter AMG biturbo V12 only manages 13 mpg in the city and 20 in the highway. The lowest rated is the 6.0-liter biturbo V12 powering the S600, which nets 12 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway.
2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior
Like the exterior, the interior of the S-Class is elegant and refined. Comfort, convenience, technology, and safety blend quite nicely into a space you wouldn’t mind spending over $100,000 to inhabit during car rides—you know, if you have that kind of money.
The S-Class coupe offers 39.7 inches of front headroom (39.2 rear), 41.4 inches of front legroom (43.0 rear), and 59.7 inches front shoulder room (59.1 rear), and a trunk capacity of 10.4 cubic feet. The S-Class sedan, on the other hand, offers the same dimensions for front passengers, but slightly less interior space for rear passengers. It does, however, boast a larger trunk, with 16.3 cubic feet of space.
