The 2019 Lincoln Continental has earned the TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, making Lincoln Motor Company the first brand to earn the IIHS’ top honor this year. The Continental earns the award when equipped with optional LED headlights, which secured a “Good” score and pushed the plus mark onto the award.

More on the Lincoln Continental: The latest Continental offers power, refinement, intelligence, and, yes, safety

To earn the TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must earn ratings of “Good” in all phases of IIHS crash testing: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests. It must also score a rating of “Advanced” or “Superior” for front crash prevention and a score of “Good” for headlights.

The Continental’s optional LED projector headlamps are available with a high-beam assist feature that automatically switches between low and high beams when other vehicles are detected for safer operation. The Continental scored a “Superior” ranking for crash prevention — the highest score possible — with standard Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection completely avoiding a collision at speeds of 12 mph and 25 mph.

The 2019 Lincoln Continental has now earned the TOP SAFETY PICK+ for three consecutive years, earning identical scores from IIHS for the 2017 and 2018 model years. Lincoln recently introduced a limited-edition Continental Coach Door Edition with rear-hinged suicide doors, which sold out in under 48 hours. The Continental is expected to remain on the market through 2020, after which it will likely be discontinued at the end of its generational cycle.
