Super Sketchy Document Suggests 720 Horsepower for 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500
When Ford revealed in January that it is reviving the Mustang Shelby GT500 for 2020, it left little room for speculation as to output by confirming that the final product will generate more than 700 horsepower. But, because it’s a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and because it simply isn’t here just yet, there is room enough to speculate how much more than 700 horsepower.
Mustang6G this week obtained a “leaked document” that suggests that the Shelby GT500’s 5.2-liter supercharged V8 will put out 720 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The document also has the new Mustang’s curb weight at 4,225 pounds — just shy of 500 pounds heavier than the GT350 — and its top speed at 190 mph.

While some of the specs incited skepticism on the Mustang6G board — specifically for the fact that its weight is so much greater than the Shelby GT350 despite the relatively low weight of a supercharger — there was as much cause for doubt provided by the fact that the leaked doc also sports a number of notable typos. The document uses the word “patrol” instead of “petrol,” “trailor” instead of “trailer,” and features some odd capitalization and punctuation issues that suggest a dubious origin.
Setting aside the issue of suspicious typographical errors, there’s the matter of the non-reliable source. User Rhyu, who posted the doc to Mustang6G on Wednesday, writes that they obtained it “from a post on reddit, which has since been deleted already.” The post in question is still up on r/cars, however, where moderators have tagged it as “Unreliable source – possibly fake” and it has a paltry 36 karma.
Though Rhyu noted that neither they nor redditor Bigfrie192 has any further info, they iterated that they trust their gut that the numbers are close to what will be revealed when the Shelby GT500 is unveiled in full likely sometime next year. If your gut is grumbling angrily, as if to tell you not to buy specs from a document that could only be less believable if it were scrawled in crayon, consider yourself justified.
