Chevy Product Manager Projects Confidence in Brand’s New Electric Car Pair
One concern that people have had about Chevrolet’s electric car lineup is that it is confusingly similar, especially in the naming department. However, Chevrolet is confident that the Bolt and Volt will serve very different audiences.
Chevrolet’s product manager Shad Balch explained to the LA Times, “The Volt is for someone who still needs a car with a gasoline engine that can make that long drive.” By contrast, the Bolt is for a driver who isn’t making cross-country trips, but still would like to make their daily commute on electric power (up to 200 miles round-trip, no less).
The Volt is also doing very well for itself. Ever since its redesign for the 2016 model year, the Volt has seen strong market performance, rivaling the Nissan LEAF in sales. “We’re at about the 100,000 mark for Volts sold and we are the number one best selling plug-in hybrid in the US,” said Balch.
In addition, Chevrolet doesn’t seem overly worried about the electric market’s biggest rival: Tesla. The Chevy Bolt’s biggest competition coming soon is the Model 3, since it is priced in the same range and offers comparable mileage. “Every story about the Model 3 includes a mention of the Bolt EV and our target date is ahead of theirs,” said Balch. Due to an incredibly high number of pre-orders, delivery of the Model 3 is expected to take an unusually long time.
