1984 Cadillac DeVille Hearse to be Featured in ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot

Besides featuring an all-female cast headlined by Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, the upcoming Ghostbusters remake will be different from the original in that the Ecto-1 will no longer be a 1959 Cadillac ambulance, but instead has been replaced with a 1984 Cadillac DeVille hearse.

The Ghostbusters reboot will hit theaters on July 15th. In the film’s story line, Leslie Jones’ character, Patty Tolan, borrows the Cadillac hearse from her uncle who runs a funeral home. The rest of the cast doesn’t seem to be in love with the black-and-red hearse from the beginning, but after a few modifications are made, along with a new paint job, the ladies start warming up to the vehicle.
“Patty borrows (the hearse) from her uncle then we transform it into a dream car,” said actress Kate McKinnin, who plays the character of Jillian Holtzmann in the reboot. “The Ecto-1, it should be called the Ecto-10.”
Also, it’s fitting the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot will feature a Cadillac from the 1984 model, since that’s the precise year the original movie starring Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray was released to theaters. Interestingly, the Cadillac ambulance Ecto-1 used in the original movie was designed to keep people alive, while the new Cadillac hearse Ecto-1 is meant to carry around dead people.
“When we set out to make Ghostbusters, Katie Dippold and I sat down and said, ‘Okay, what would we be really bummed if we didn’t see?’ ” aked Director Paul Feig. “There were a lot of things: Proton packs, ghost traps, and slime, but the main, number one thing we said was the Ecto-1.”
