These 3 Plug-In Hybrids Are Already Discontinued After Landing on a Major 2026 Reliability List

Plug-in hybrids promise electric commuting with gasoline backup, but recent reliability data paints a less simple picture. Several 2026 models named among the least reliable plug-in hybrids have faced recalls, fire-risk warnings, software problems, or production cuts.

Plug-in hybrids combine a gas engine, battery pack, charging hardware, electric motors, and software into one vehicle. That versatility can appeal to drivers who want electric range for daily use without giving up traditional fuel.

According to Consumer Reports, traditional hybrids have 15% fewer reported problems than gas-only vehicles, while electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids together have 80% more problems than gas-only models. The issue, based on the models listed, is not hybridization alone but the added complexity of plug-in systems.

Stellantis Cuts Three Plug-in Hybrids After Reliability Concerns

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid have all been discontinued. Each appeared on Consumer Reports’ “Least Reliable Plug-In Hybrids of 2026” list.

The Wrangler 4xe faced warnings telling owners to park outside and avoid charging because of fire risk, explains Jalopnik. It was also recalled over sand introduced into engines during manufacturing, and a previous over-the-air software update reportedly disabled some vehicles.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe used similar plug-in hardware in a more refined SUV package. It was positioned as an electrified version of Jeep’s off-road-capable family SUV, but it also faced reliability concerns and has now been removed from the lineup. Other Grand Cherokee trims remain available, including Laredo, Laredo X, Laredo Altitude, Limited, Limited Reserve, Summit, and three-row versions.

The Pacifica Hybrid was one of the most practical ideas in the segment, offering three rows, sliding doors, family space, and enough electric range for short daily errands. Yet Stellantis recalled about 24,000 Pacifica Hybrid minivans globally in 2024 over fire-risk concerns, followed by a 2026 recall covering more than 17,000 2020-to-2022 models over a high-voltage battery defect linked to thermal runaway.

Ford And Mazda Remain In The Segment Despite Recalls

The Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid remains available for the 2026 model year, though not in six states because of state-level emissions rules. It offers room for five passengers and about 37 miles of fully electric range.

Its powertrain is a 2.5-liter iVCT Atkinson Cycle I-4 plug-in hybrid system. Ford has issued a recall for Escape Plug-In Hybrids involving short-circuit battery defects that could cause loss of drive power or, in rare cases, fire.

The Mazda CX-90 PHEV also remains on sale. It is a three-row SUV with seating for up to seven passengers and a 323-horsepower e-Skyactiv drivetrain. The model has faced recalls tied to electronic problems that can trigger failsafe mode, sudden power loss, or engine stall.

Volvo’s XC60 Recharge Stays On Sale With Battery And Braking Issues Noted

The Volvo XC60 Recharge remains part of Volvo’s lineup, which includes mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. It combines a family-crossover format with 455 horsepower and a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds.

The model has been linked to high-voltage battery modules that can short circuit and create fire risk. It has also faced a recall related to regenerative braking software.

The broader pattern is uneven. Traditional hybrids such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight have existed since the 1990s, while mainstream plug-in hybrids began later with the 2011 Chevy Volt. The 2026 list shows that the plug-in formula still carries reliability challenges for several automakers, even as some models remain on the market.
