The departure of the R8 in 2024 marked the end of an era for Audi’s flagship sports car. Once the showcase of the brand’s performance credentials, the model disappeared from the catalog at a time when several enthusiast-focused vehicles have also left the range.

Today, Audi’s performance offering is largely limited to the RS3, RS5, and RSQ8 Performance, while the S range remains more extensive. New models are in development, including a new RS6, and the company is also preparing an electric sports coupe expected to arrive in 2027.

Audi’s Sports Car Lineup Has Become Increasingly Limited

The transition toward electrification has reshaped Audi’s performance portfolio. As reported by Auto Plus, the manufacturer’s current selection of sporty models is considerably smaller than it was only a few years ago.

While Audi is preparing future performance vehicles, including a next-generation RS6, it is also developing a dedicated electric sports coupe. The model was previewed by the Concept C unveiled last year and is scheduled to make its debut in 2027.

The disappearance of the R8 has left a noticeable gap at the top of Audi’s sports car hierarchy. Introduced as the brand’s halo performance model, the supercar served as a technological and image leader throughout its production run before ending its career in 2024.

Gernot Döllner Hints at a Possible R8 Revival

During an event in Austria, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner was questioned about the future of V8 engines within the company’s lineup. The discussion eventually shifted toward the possibility of a future R8 sharing its platform with the Lamborghini Temerario.

When asked about such a scenario, Döllner reportedly responded with a smile and the words “good idea.” The exchange immediately fueled questions about whether a project could already be under consideration.

The remarks were made in the context of a broader discussion about performance vehicles at Audi, where electrification continues to play a growing role. The CEO did not provide further details about any future R8 program.

Audi and Lamborghini Have a Long History of Technical Collaboration

A potential connection between a future R8 and the Lamborghini Temerario would not be unprecedented. The first two generations of the Audi R8 shared major technical elements with Lamborghini models.

The original R8 and its successor used the same naturally aspirated V10 engines found in the Lamborghini Gallardo and later the Huracán. This close relationship earned the Audi a reputation as a relative of Lamborghini’s smaller supercars.

During the Austrian event, Döllner also praised the Temerario’s powertrain. “The Temerario is equipped with an excellent V8. 10,000 rpm, a truly exceptional engine. And as I said, within the Volkswagen Group, we have the possibility to take advantage of different technical solutions and combine them,” he said.

The Lamborghini Temerario uses an electrified 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing a combined output of 920 horsepower. The comments from Audi’s CEO have renewed attention around the possibility of future technical cooperation between the two brands, although no official announcement regarding a new R8 has been made.
