2019 Chevrolet Malibu XL gets 2.0-liter Turbo with Active Fuel Management
The Chevrolet Malibu seems to have avoided the chop in the great reaping of sedans in the United States (for now), but it’s only thriving in China, particularly with its extended Malibu XL variant. To help make this sedan more appealing to drivers, General Motors is equipping the Malibu XL with the all-new 2.0-liter intelligent variable-cylinder turbo engine.

“The Malibu XL is a great example of GM’s advanced engine design at work,” said Scott Lawson, general director of Chevrolet for SAIC-GM. “Chevrolet’s flagship sedan for China has raised the bar for the brand through its performance and agility.”
The 2.0-liter turbo engine utilizes Active Fuel Management, a technology featured in several engines offered throughout GM’s product portfolio. The technology works with variable valve lift and timing to optimize performance and efficiency so that the Malibu XL gets the best of both when it’s needed the most. The ability to seamless activate and deactivate cylinders as well as two valve heights makes the 2.0-liter one of the most dynamic engines in the segment.
Kris Keary, assistant chief engineer of the new 2.0T engine, said that turbocharging is the key piece to the puzzle, offering a balance of power and efficiency that works in conjunction with the 2.0-liter’s innovative AFM.
“A unique valvetrain design complements the turbocharging system to make the most of the engine’s available power,” said Keary. “The seamless integration of technologies provides a satisfying driving experience, confident performance and efficiency through the entire engine operating range.”
Chevrolet expects that 90 percent of its vehicles will be offered with turbocharged engines in China by 2021.
