Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Appeal to Different Market Segments
GM chooses to market the Silverado and Sierra as different models, as both trucks offer different benefits to certain truck buyers
In many ways, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are very similar trucks. After all, they share the same platform, engines, and powertrains.
Yet, General Motors has continuously marketed these two trucks as separate models, due to the fact that each vehicle attracts a different consumer base.
GMC Vehicle Offerings: GMC model lineup
The differences between the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra are more apparent than ever with the latest generation of both pickups. The Silverado’s exterior bears a bold, modern design, while the Sierra possesses a more traditional look.
The Sierra also has an assortment of exclusive features. This includes Adaptive Ride Control, the Multi-Pro tailgate, and the upcoming carbon fiber bed.
The GMC Sierra comes equipped with more premium features, mostly because GMC has a more affluent customer base. According to Stu Pierce, the GMC Trucks Marketing Manager, approximately 80 percent of the Sierras GMC sells cost more than $50,000.
In contrast, the Chevrolet Silverado is marketed as a truck more tuned to off-roading. The Silverado’s top trim level is the High Country, which comes with a long list of outdoor amenities. The Sierra’s top trim level, on the other hand, is the luxurious Denali model.
Chevrolet does offer luxurious Silverado trims, while the standard GMC Sierra still packs plenty of power. Indeed, Pierce estimates that 70 to 80 percent of the GMC Sierras sold come with the powerful 6.2-liter engine. Sandor Piszar, the Marketing Director for Chevy Trucks, simply states that having two truck brands with different identities has its advantages.
“One of the strengths of General Motors is having two truck brands,” Piszar told CarBuzz during an interview. “We’ve worked hard to make sure they are working on a complementary basis versus at odds or against each other. It gives us a tactical advantage over our competition.”
What’s Your Current Car Worth?: Trade-in value
While the Ford F-150 may remain the single best-selling truck on the market, Piszar claims that a combination of GM’s truck sales has outpaced the F-150’s sales for five consecutive years.
So, whether you are looking for a luxurious truck model or one that can get the job done, GM has a pickup truck for you.
