A fresh semester of school means more vehicles on the road during morning and evening rush hours. Try to avoid taking routes that pass by schools and/or that include school crosswalks. If you have no alternative route to your destination, plan on leaving the house an extra 10-15 minutes earlier each day.

Autumn often means damp weather for much of the U.S. And wet asphalt means slower travel speeds and more accidents during your daily commute.

One way to help avoid being late due to rainy-day traffic is to monitor the weather forecast the night before and morning of. If the forecast predicts rain, make sure to leave the house at least 20 minutes earlier than usual.

During the drive, use a navigation app to get the latest real-time traffic updates. It will alert you to any slow spots caused by accident-related traffic jams so you can take a detour.

Fall also signals an influx of Starbucks drive-thru traffic (thanks, in part, to autumnal offerings like Pumpkin Spice). No matter which Starbucks you go to, you’re likely to wait more than five minutes for your beverage, according to research results from Rutgers University grad students.

A simple way to reduce your drive-thru wait time is to time your coffee run either before or after the morning peak. The best way to do this is to ask the location you frequent the most what those peak times are, since every location has different peak times.

(Though, if you want to avoid drive-thru lines altogether to save yourself even more time on your fall commutes, consider packing your own coffee and some snacks from home.)
