FYI: It’s Super Easy to Donate Your Car to Goodwill
Donating something you no longer need so others can benefit from it is a wonderful thing to do. That’s why Goodwill gives everybody the option to donate their vehicle so others can have the opportunity to own a car and to help out the local community. It turns out that it’s actually really easy to donate your car to Goodwill, and the benefits extend beyond helping others.
Trying to Fix Your Ride? Here are some helpful maintenance tips to consider
The steps
The process of donating your vehicle to Goodwill takes place in three steps: You fill out a form, you schedule the pick up, and you receive a tax receipt. Simple! And if you think Goodwill won’t take your run-down, rusted jalopy that’s been collecting dust over the years, think again. The company accepts all types of vehicles, whether they’re in working condition or not. This list includes: SUVs, vans, trucks, cars, motorcycles, campers, motor homes, airplanes, jet skis, boats, and even riding lawn mowers.
The pick up
When you schedule the date for pick up, Goodwill arrives to your location — which can be your home or any other public location of your choice — and takes the vehicle (and the necessary keys/locks). Depending on which state you live in, you may be eligible to receive certain tax benefits from donating your vehicle. As such, a few days after your vehicle is picked up, you’ll receive tax information in the mail from Goodwill. Once you receive those tax papers, you’re able to cancel any insurance or registration details that apply to that vehicle.
Do it the Right Way: Proper brake maintenance ensures your vehicle’s longevity
The benefits
After your vehicle is taken away by a Goodwill tow truck driver, it’s put up for auction immediately, if it is drivable/usable. Once the vehicle is sold, the money made from the transaction is invested into local community programs to help those in your area. Not only that, but the person buying the car may not have been able to buy a car any other way, so you’re giving them the opportunity to succeed by having a vehicle of their own.
To set up a Goodwill car donation, you can visit the program’s website or call 1-866-233-8586 for more information.
