The production Genesis GV80 will likely resemble the concept version that debuted in 2017

The first-ever Genesis SUV is expected to go on sale sometime during the first quarter of 2020 — about three years after the concept version first debuted at the New York International Auto Show.

Genesis brand leader Manfred Fitzgerald confirmed the imminent arrival of the GV80 midsize SUV in an interview earlier this week.

Genesis hasn’t revealed many details about the production GV80, but spy shots seem to indicate that it will share a pentagon-shaped grill, thin LED headlights, and other design cues with the GV80 Concept revealed in 2017. Expect the production version to also feature beautifully proportioned lines, detailed exterior design, and a cabin loaded with elegantly luxurious materials and advanced technologies.

The Genesis GV80 Concept

The powertrain for the GV80 remains unknown, but potential options include a 3.8-liter V6 and a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6. The original concept ran on hydrogen fuel cell technology, but it’s not clear when — or if — that experimental powertrain will eventually be offered for the production GV80.

The release of the GV80 will allow Genesis to compete in the highly lucrative luxury midsize SUV market against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, and Audi Q7.

The GV80 isn’t the only new vehicle on the way for Genesis. Fitzgerald said the GV70 compact SUV will hit the market in early 2021. The luxury brand is also working on production versions of its Essentia Concept coupe and its Mint Concept city car, but Fitzgerald wasn’t ready to say when those vehicles might make their debut.

For already existing models, Genesis is prepping redesigns of the G90 full-size sedan (coming this fall) and G80 midsize sedan (coming early next year).
